About Us

Real guitar for real guitar nuts!

Ben Rogers’ Instrumental Asylum is a high-energy, surf-jazz trio dedicated to reverb drenched surf/gypsy/Tarantino guitar. Their albums and live performances have received strong reviews from critics in Australia, USA and UK:

“If you like vintage instro-guitar, do yourself a favor and check these boss Aussies out. Rogers’ Instrumental Asylum is the real deal.” – Pete Prown, Vintage Guitar (USA), 2018

“A fine and varied album it has some outstanding tracks in Heroes, Twenty Thirteen Summer, Bellywacker and In Search of Lasseters Riff itself.” – Alan Taylor, Pipeline Magazine (UK), 2018

A muscular, lovingly distorted guitar sound” – Greg Haymes, Times Union (USA)

There are no vocals on this album. They would be superfluous on material interpreted by Ben Rogers, a guitar player whose genre bending technique, taste and eclecticism place him among the world’s great guitarists.” – Billy Pinnell, JB Mag, Rhythms Magazine (Australia)

“…guitar ace Ben Rogers brings the rock instrumental sound solidly into the now” – Robert Silverstein, 20th Century Guitar (USA)

A muscular, lovingly distorted guitar sound” – Greg Haymes, Times Union (USA)

“…this is a band that takes no prisoners.” – Matthew Frederick, The Age (Australia)

Instrumental dynamite” – Peter Thomas, Big Beat of the 50s (Australia)

Huge guitar, intense energy, and very emotional” – Phil Dirt, Reverb Central (USA)

Against the hard-driving rhythm section of Nikki Scarlett on bass and Denis Close on drums, Ben fires salvo after salvo of tastily aggressive licks…” – Alan Taylor, Pipeline (UK)

Featuring the ever reliable Denis Close in the engine room, the trio tore up the stage…” Daniel Gregson, The Age (Australia)

Ben Rogers’ Instrumental Asylum is Ben (guitar), Nikki Scarlett (bass) and Denis Close (drums). They’re based in Melbourne, Australia, and they play a mix of rocking original compositions and instrumental classics that pay homage to their influences (Link Wray, Django Reinhardt, Ventures, Atlantics, Shadows, Duane Eddy), but with their own distinctive distorted twang and tough edge.
